Choosing a viewpoint

Always look at the subject from every angle before starting, just as you would if painting a portrait. The daffodil is a nightmare to draw face-on but, in profile, the trumpet is shown to its advantage. In contrast, the sunny rays of a dandelion are diminished when viewed from the side. In a group of flowers, you could show a variety of positions, giving a range of information about the flowers from the back, front, side, below or above. You may also wish to include various stages of growth.

Try to perfect your powers of observation, sometimes squinting to cut out detail and pare down information. Judge with your eyes, not your brain. You can never be sure that a feature is a certain size or proportion. Make sure, for example, that petals are the right shape. You can change the whole personality of a flower just by misjudging the gaps between petals. Some lead right into the centre, while others are gently scalloped. Flowers are often not symmetrical and frequently will surprise you. Observation and variety are the keys to successfully capturing individual character.
